Finished the mandatory Playground items

I just finished the mandatory exercises #'s 2,3,16,17,18,19,20. Looking back, I think it would have been a useful for me to try all of the 24 things. I’m am going to check out Library Thing though, as I’ve heard good things about it.

AskAway

Somehow, my "real" question did not get posted to the North Vancouver District Library. A librarian in Kamloops and I chatted. I told her that this was a training exercise and apologized. She was very gracious about it.

I liked the AskAway service. Although, I can see how some people may be intimidated and not know how to engage in a "chat." Do patrons use this service a lot?

NVDPL Databases

I looked at Kids Search as my son chose Trevor Linden as his "Night of the Notables" project at school. It brought up 100 hits, all of them with photos, which is great. It would have been helpful to sort these by date -- the only option here is by title.

I looked at Auto Repair reference for myself as I drive an old car that is starting to become expensive to repair. I will pass this along to others

Hate to admit, but I've never looked at either of these -- both will be helpful!

Microsoft Office Word and Outlook

I like Outlook a lot, although I tend to put way too many tasks so I see quite a few reminders! I'm still getting used to 2007.

It took a bit of time to getting used to where things were in Word 2007. I'm still working on this ...

Outlook Calendars

Yes, I think I will use calendars more often ... I just need to spend a more time playing around in Outlook.

Email netiquette

These tips were helpful:

  • Trim back the old messages
  • The golden rule to avoid being phished is to never ever click the links within the text of the e-mail

And I really liked this article, which I am going to save here http://www.library.yale.edu/training/netiquette/index.html
